All Jeff Stewart had to do was point out a pelican to son John as it glided low over the waves at Carolina Beach. Ever since, whenever John sees one, he stretches his arms out like wings and, mesmerized, matches the bird's every graceful movement. John's also fond of repeating his dad's saying, "A strange bird is the pelican/His beak can hold more than his belly can!"

Jeff and John live at Carolina Beach full-time now, ever since Jeff fell in love with the island during a week's vacation three years ago, and he's convinced the view from Snow's Cut Bridge is what helped him make up his mind. He and John go over to the beach almost every day from their home "mid-island," and Jeff – a self-employed marketing consultant for the hospitality industry – wouldn't trade their coastal life for anything. With their home already rising significantly in value in Carolina Beach, Jeff feels his and John's future is secure in what he calls "paradise on Pleasure Island."
